Day 01 - San Diego to Alpine CA

Medium tough first day, but short. We woke up to rain and decided to wait it out. The weather report suggested that the weather would clear around 10:00 am. At about 10:30 we decided we better get started, even though there was still a light rain.

We rode the 2-miles down to the beach and dipped our from wheels into the surf, asked a nice gentleman to snap a quick group picture and got rolling at 11:23 am.

The rain finally stopped around noon and we had partly cloudy skies the rest of the day.

It was uphill all day, gradual at first, including at trip through the Mission Trails Regional Park (where Jerry & Michele identified several birds, then steeper.

We arrived in Alpine around 5:00 pm, checked in to the Alpine Apts. Motel and, after showering, had dinner at Tapatio's. Jerry and I just had burritos. My chile verde burrito was very tasty, but I don't think Jerry enjoyed his quit as much. Michele's seafood soup was delicious.

Earlier in the day it looked like it was going to be fast food Monday. Breakfast at Denny's then lunch at Jack in the Box. Functional. We were so hungry at lunch that it didn't matter were we ate. It was all about calories, I was starting to bonk.

Ride stats (Garmin 705):
Miles: 36.0
Start Elevation: 0-ish (beach, right?)
End Elevation: 1852
Total Climbing: 2388

  1. Don't get any sand in your drivetrain!

Have you started realizing the things you won't need to send back yet?
